Playing it Safe

What I’m getting at when I say it’s better to just say what you want and leave it at that, sans whatever add-ons or in depth (defensive) exposition you might feel compelled to add, is…

You can shoot yourself in the foot by doing that, and the point you were trying to get across is liable to get lost in the translation.  If you can’t finish a putting your opinion into words because you’re too concerned with covering every single aspect of whatever it is you’re talking about, if you’re too concerned with making your opinion unassailable, the opinions you do manage to put out there are going to be few and far between, and of those, very few will spark a reaction.

You’ve kind of gotta ask yourself, what’s the function of putting your voice out there to be heard in the first place? To some degree there’s the vanity, the display of your own thought process, your own perspective, and I get sometimes wanting to make it clearly comprehensive. No one wants to feel like they’ve just made themselves look like an idiot, so I get the effort to avoid it. The problem with that though is… you have to risk making a fool of yourself, you have to risk failing.

That’s just as true with writing, radio hosting, blogging, podcasting, or whatever else…

Bogging yourself down by playing it safe will cripple whatever it is you’re trying to do.
